Initiating in April 1914, there have been over fifty productions of Greek tragedies and comedies presented at at one of the oldest and best preserved Ellenic theatres: the arena of Siracusa. The background scenary created by the renowned sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro, provided the framework for the interpretation by well-known actors, including: Piera Degli Esposti, Ugo Pagliai, Paola Gassman, Francesco Scianna.  This season’s program replicated the original production of Aeschilus Orestia trilogy Agamennon and Coefores/Eumenides, initially staged one hundred years ago.

This extraordinary celebration was enhanced by a number of exhibitions, conferences and public events focused on classic theatre. Time can never fade or change the fundamental truths expressed in these ancient writings. These include a sense of justice, the ongoing debate how the legal system respects the highest ethical values, and the discontent among the general public with the way that punishment does not fit the crime, even for serious infractions. As in the past, all future directors will provide their own individual viewpoint and interpretation of these classic and lasting works.

In occasion of the 100th anniversary the Greek theatre played host to opera performances and classical music, resulting in a season full of enthusiasm, great interest and passion.

This is not the end.
