Siracusa, Santa Lucia e il lontano Nord Europa
As happens every year, Syracuse was decked out in order to honour its patron saint, St. Lucia. The saint, born in the city at the end of the third century AD, was martyred on December 13th , 304 during the persecution of Diocletian. That ‘s why the celebrations take place primarily on December 13th, when the Syracusans carry the statue of the saint in slow procession from the cathedral - where the statue of the patron saint is kept throughout the year - to the church of Saint Lucia, the shrine, in which the statue will stay for a week.
